As another year draws to a close, I want to take a moment to wish you and your family a very happy holiday season and share my thoughts about this remarkable year for our company.
This past year brought many challenges to organizations across the globe. Economic instability increased as the year progressed. In these turbulent times, LumaSense has made it a goal to simplify your customer experience, so that you can focus on the success of your business.
To that end, we invested heavily in our business, bringing new talent and capacity to our company to drive the products, innovative solutions and service that you need to stay focused on your business. We streamlined our processes and augmented our infrastructure to speed up order acknowledgement and shipment tracking. We also established a new Global Services team to provide better post-sales service support for repair, calibration and other services.
Finally, we delivered several exciting new products and are on track to release even more offerings over the course of the next few months. Because we understand that you rely on us to provide you with quality solutions that help your company perform optimally, the following are a few new product highlights from 2011:

Besides those organic improvements, we continued our strategy of acquiring companies that allow us to better serve you. Last month, LumaSense completed our third acquisition in the last eighteen months, bringing Louisiana-based Reliability Point into the LumaSense family. This will allow us to even further enhance our sales, support, and aftermarket services for our thermal imaging product line.
Our colleagues worldwide rose to the occasion this past year to overcome challenges created by these rapid changes, growth and overall economic challenges. We have improved tremendously as a company and look forward to delighting you even more in 2012.
This letter would not be complete without heartfelt thanks to all responsible for the success of our company as we enter our seventh year – our customers! Thank you for putting your trust in us to satisfy your sensing needs. I also would like to thank our partners for teaming with us to provide world-class solutions globally. Lastly, I would like to thank all LumaSense colleagues who go above and beyond in service of our stakeholders everywhere.
Thanks again and many happy wishes
for the Holiday Season!

Temperature Driven Process Control of Induction Heating Processes

EFD Induction Group is Europe's largest, and the world second largest, supplier of induction solutions. Since 1950, EFD has delivered over 15,000 induction solutions in the world’s most demanding industries. For nearly 50 of its 61-year history, EFD has chosen LumaSense Technologies for pyrometers and thermal imagers. In fact, the LumaSense PI 6000 controller was developed in close coordination with EFD.
According to EFD, (www.efd-induction.com) in induction heating, power is applied to the object by an induction coil; alternating current flows through and generates a magnetic field. Within the field, eddy currents are induced and heat is produced. Induction heating is fast – it takes less than a second to achieve a uniform surface temperature of 1,000°C on small metal components.
FD turned to LumaSense to provide highly accurate infrared pyrometers and thermal imagers to quickly measure object temperatures. EFD combined these measured temperatures with the LumaSense PID programmable controller, so the induction generator and their entire process could be controlled automatically and with a very high repeatability. EFD appreciates the LumaSense products for:

-
Fast and easy process control and optimization
-
Robust, repeatable processes monitoring
-
Easy integration in existing and new induction heating processes
-
Full process documentation to prove process reliability and maintain quality specifications
With active boiler management, reduced and targeted cleanings our customers have seen a return on their investment in just a few months.

Continuous Flare Stack Monitoring

One of Austria’s largest integrated, international oil and gas companies, OMV (www.omv.com) wanted assurance that it was in full compliance with government-set smoke emissions regulations. OMV has an annual refining capacity of 22.3 million tons and supplies over 4,700 filling stations in 13 European countries.
Hydrocarbon waste gases are burned off in smoke stacks to prevent them from entering the atmosphere. Continuous monitoring of pilot flames and flared gases is critical to ensure that the harmful gases will be ignited. Monitoring is also essential so that refineries can prove compliance with pilot status recording requirements.
OMV wanted to keep its stacks clean of smoke with the help of steam water. “Because of the pressure from the governmental side we put a lot of steam into the system. So most of the times we only have steam coming out of the flare stack.” OMV needed to monitor the pilot flame and keep the temperatures at the precise range for its on-shore flaring.
OMV uses the LumaSense Quasar 8100. The Quasar 8100 is an integrated, automated smoke control system that provides continuous monitoring and detection of flames on flare stacks and reports an analog signal depending on the particle fraction in the smoke produced, up to 400m away from the flare source.
However, one of the greatest challenges while planning and commissioning a flare monitoring system is to reach a precise alignment without a flare. OMV knew that because of our deep application experience, LumaSense would achieve correct optical alignment considering environmental conditions such as wind, rain, fog, and sun. OMV trusted us to properly adjust the signal strength given warning contacts and time lags for example. Additionally, we provided turn-key services to review of the entire wiring and control loop and to adjust the signal between the Quasar 8100 and the control room. LumaSense delivered the right product and services for OMV.

Setting the Standard for Gas Analysis and Calibration

VSL Dutch Metrology Institute (www.vsl.nl/3) based in Delft, the Netherlands, is the National Metrology Institute appointed by the Dutch government to maintain and develop the national measurement standards for companies, laboratories and organizations directly traceable to international standards. VSL provides Primary Reference Gas Mixtures used worldwide to make gas composition measurements traceable and comparable. These internationally accepted mixtures are used in both industrial and environmental analyses in a wide field of applications from volatile organic compounds to natural gas. In addition to the supply of gas mixtures, VSL also provides calibration of gas monitors and analysis of gas mixtures.
To accomplish gas mixture analysis, this prestigious organization uses the LumaSense 1412. The Photoacoustic Field Gas-Monitor 1412 is a highly accurate, reliable and stable quantitative field gas monitor. Based on the photoacoustic infrared detection method, the 1412 can measure almost any field gas that absorbs infrared light.
VSL verifies their gas mixes with a wide range of analyzers among which the 1412. VSL likes the flexibility of the 1412, allowing them to easily calibrate many different gases such as ammonia, formaldehyde, TOC, CO2 and others. The ability to measure and calibrate many gases is due to the 1412’s optical filter carousel. This unique feature enables VSL to selectively measure the concentration of up to 5 component gases and water vapor in any sample. The 1412 also compensates for interference between the measured field gases using the unique cross-compensation feature. Plus the 1412's detection limit is typically in the 10-² ppm range.
Find out why VSL trusts the LumaSense 1412 with its gas analysis.
VSL is the national metrology institute of The Netherlands. VSL is part of the Holland Metrology Group (known until now as the NMi Group) with TNO as a shareholder. VSL is a private company with a public task.
