PMV Calculation

Two conditions must be fulfilled to maintain thermal comfort. One is that the actual combination of skin temperature and the body's core temperature provide a sensation of thermal neutrality.

The second is the fulfillment of the body's energy balance: the heat produced by the metabolism should be equal to the amount of heat lost from the body.

The metabolism is the energy released by oxidation processes in the human body, which depends on the muscular activity.

The Comfort Equation derived by P.O.Fanger is too complicated for manual arithmetic and is normaly solved using a computer. The complete equation is described in ISO 7730.

Calculation of PMV based on Equivalent Temperature

Based on the physical parameters it is possible to evaluate comfort conditions using the comfort equation.

The below Excel program will provide you with the PMV value (Predicted Mean Vote) based on the input of the physical parameters.

Calculation of other indices such as Effective Temperature (ET*), Standard Effective Temperature (SET*), Discomfort (DISC), Thermal Sensation (TSENS), Predicted Mean Vote (PMV), Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied (PPD) and Heat Stress Index (HSI) can be done on the homepage: Division of Environmental & Life Sciences Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia
