Letter from the CEO
 |
Dear LumaNews reader,
Thank you for the very positive response to our first newsletter. Many of you provided suggestions and ideas to ensure that LumaNews is a valued communication vehicle. We have incorporated your welcomed comments so that LumaNews continues to provide relevant, timely and interesting information.
|
Since our last communication, the level of risk and uncertainty in the global economy has increased significantly. This is causing companies around the world to be more vigilant about investments and spending. As a result, companies are more aggressively pursuing solutions that improve quality, reduce costs and drive productivity across their enterprise. We recognize these imperatives and are introducing two key offerings to help achieve these goals.
First, we are excited about our new BoilerSpection™ system targeted at coal-fired power plants. BoilerSpection uses our infrared camera system and optics developed and optimized exclusively for boilers and industrial furnaces. Because BoilerSpection provides the clearest, most informative through flame imaging and deep data analysis and archiving capabilities, it offers coal plants a powerful return on investment. In fact, our BoilerSpection customers have significantly improved generating capacity resulting from reducing unnecessary de-rating actions required to clean slag from boiler tubes.
Secondly, building on our years of expertise in infrared calibration sources, sensor and instrumentation, we have launched a series of service offerings. The goal is to extend the value of your LumaSense products. We are initially offering 4 new service contracts in the US and Europe: calibration, extended warranty, software maintenance and our LumaServe™ support solutions for BoilerSpection, ThermalSpection and Critical Vessel Monitoring.
We have more information on both of these in today’s newsletter. In addition, you will learn about interesting applications, as well as information about our Level I thermography training courses that we will start in November.
As always, please keep your ideas and comments flowing to me: ceo@lumasenseinc.com. Until next time, our best wishes for the remainder of the year.
With our best wishes,
Vivek

Determining emissivity is not always easy. To help you, we offer emissivity stickers, (P/N 3 858 590) which allow you to place the sticker beside the measuring point and get a temperature reading based on the known emissivity of the sticker. Just point your pyrometer or camera at the sticker with the preset emissivity of the sticker (for example, Ɛ=93% @ 8 to 14µm) and get a reliable reading instantly!
Our stickers are designed to work for object temperatures around 100°C or lower for more than 3000 hours. For higher temperatures, up to 160°C, they will last approximately 2 hours. When using the stickers please make sure the spot size of your IR device is smaller than the diameter of the sticker (25mm). If the spot size is larger, just place several stickers side-by-side to enlarge the surface.
Maintenance and safety engineers in chemical and biochemical plants have found our emissivity sticker especially useful. They need to inspect shiny stainless pipes all across the plant, with an IR device and our emissivity stickers obtaining accurate temperature readings is made dramatically easier and less time consuming.

Application News
LumaSense offers the widest range of non-contact temperature measurement solutions specifically for the steel and primary metals industry. With our broad product portfolio and expert engineering support, we help you select the right instrument for the right application.
For example, Saarstahl AG found that they could replace 6 pyrometers with just 2 thermal imaging cameras to more precisely control the temperatures during the casting cool down process. By using just two LumaSense 640x480 pixel thermal imagers, temperatures were resolved over wider areas (307,200 measuring points). Plus the ruggedized LumaSense system required no retooling and therefore reduced maintenance costs. The system software analysis tools also enabled on-going process improvements for their continuous casting processes. Learn more about this and solutions for other metal production processes.

Product Highlights
LUMASENSE 1316-2 MONITOR
In line with our vision of permanency of the earth’s resources, the LumaSense 1316-2 helps reduce refrigerant emissions and global warming potential and helps industrial customers reach their sustainability goals.
One of the main ways grocery chains and retailers can to reduce emissions is by monitoring refrigerant leaks using infrared (IR) technology. For more than 50 years, LumaSense has been the leading provider of infrared gas monitoring. With over 400,000 gas analyzers and automotive exhaust monitors deployed worldwide, LumaSense is considered the foremost authority on gas instruments.
The LumaSense 1316-2 monitors refrigerants (R134a, R404a), CO2 and hydrocarbons. There is groundswell of activity in this area, which was highlighted at the 2011 Energy and Store Development Conference. For more details about how LumaSense gas monitoring products can reduce refrigerant emissions and make our planet greener, click here.

We are often asked if our monitors can measure a specific gas. While seemingly an easy question, the answer is actually quite complicated. Our monitors can measure up to 2000 different gases. However, to answer definitively, we need to understand the specific sample conditions such as temperature, humidity, other gasses present and the concentrations of the target gases. The best way to determine if a gas can be measured is to talk to one of our specialist or better yet, have us come to your site to help you solve your measuring problem.

Application News
Ensuring a healthy working environment demands constant monitoring and awareness. LumaSense offers precision gas instruments capable ofmeasuring environmental conditions. Our instruments make it easy to understand the following:
-
Concentration of gases in the working environment,
-
Performance of devices intended to capture or enclose harmful gases, and
-
Workplace heat stress.
For example, LumaSense has set up facility-wide monitoring systems for toxic gases in hazardous production environments, such as chemical storage rooms, breathing zones, semi-conductor front end lines, and systems for protecting printing shop workers exposed to volatile organic compounds. Because of our instruments' accuracy, reliability, absence of consumable and the ease of use, industrial companies have the ability to improve the health and safety for their workforces.

Pyrometers Improve Quality and Yield in Silicon Growth
Photovoltaics World September 2011 Temperature control has always been one of the most critical parameters in optimizing many complicated solar photovoltaic manufacturing processes because it plays an important role in producing higher-quality product and increasing overall yield. Unfortunately, it’s also been one of the most difficult things to measure in these processes.

It Takes More Than a Meter
The concept of smart grid has become a misnomer in the United States. When people in the U.S. say "smart grid," most of the time they really mean "smart meters."
