Sorbent Gas Filter Testing
With higher and higher concerns around indoor environment quality, in particular concerning airborne pollutants like ammonia, carbonyls, or other volatile organic compounds (VOC), air purification and air cleaning solutions are gaining importance and a regulatory frame exists with design and test standards applying to the qualification of air purification media.
LumaSense’s Gas Solutions are trusted by multiple advanced filtration materials and respiratory equipment manufacturers worldwide which rely on their exceptional performances to characterize and test the critical specifications of their products.
One of the main technique used by air purification devices is the selective sorption of targeted pollutants at the surface of the “filtration” bed. Like for mesh filters stopping solid particles, a sorbent bed has an operational limit which is called its Gas Filter Capacity. In over-capacity, when all sorption sites are activated, the air purification performance is rapidly decaying. Most standard test methods use the breakthrough time characterization to verify or benchmark the performance of sorbent beds.
In order to perform this characterization with accuracy and reliability, manufacturers need high end analytical instrumentation with a combination of challenging requirements: capability to monitor multiple gas species for which their gas filter needs compliance check, wide dynamic range from low detection limits at trace levels up to over the challenge gas concentration. Their quality procedures also require high repeatability of systematic tests. It is therefore, critical for their need to have a highly stable and reliable instrument with minimal operating costs.
The Photoacoustic Multi-Gas Monitor INNOVA 1412i is a very appropriate analytical solution to support the characterization of breakthrough time for air purification materials based on sorption.
- Analytical versatility: capable of monitoring any gas that absorbs in the mid-IR spectrum, with detection limit usually in the ppb range. The gas selectivity is achieved by the choice of appropriate optical filters among the 27 filters available in our portfolio.
- Multi-Gas capability: Each gas monitor can be configured with up to 5 different filters, and calibrated to measure as many different challenge gases with a unique instrument. If one optical filter is appropriate for multiple challenge gas, the monitor can store multiple calibration banks applicable for each individual gas and let the user selects which one needs to be activated.
- High dynamic range: enabling to monitor upstream and downstream of the filtration system with a unique instrument.
Our detection limit chart gives an overview of the extent of gas compounds and of applications that we can cover.
