Fermentation process control typically involves the monitoring of oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethanol (EtOH) in the exhaust stream of fermentation reactors.
Traditional means of gas measurement that require constant conditions are not well suited for fermentation metabolism. Exhaust gas measurement based on the ratio of CO2 production and O2 consumption (i.e. the Respiratory Quotient) is ideal.
For example, when fermentation is carried out on a batch basis, the proportions of CO2 and O2 are reliable indicators of the efficiency of the production process and the status of the bio-reactor (respiration rate in the fermenter).
Exhaust gas analysis of fermentation process using NDIR technology is both accurate and cost-effective.
Our NDIR technology based Solution
The INNOVA 1316-3 is a cost-effective 3-channel gas monitor designed to meet the basic needs of fermentation process control with simultaneous measurement of O2, CO2 and EtOH. Each unit includes its own sampling system for a single channel, and features a serial communication port (RS232 and USB available) for system supervision from a remote workstation.
Although the INNOVA 1316-3 can operate independently, its design is optimized for use as part of an online monitoring solution for multiple fermenters. Indeed, we also offer the LumaSoft Multi Point 7950 software for the supervision of a network of multiple INNOVA 1316-3 units (up to 24 units). All you need is to connect each individual monitor to a standard USB-hub which is itself connected to the central supervision PC.
With a user-friendly graphical interface, the LumaSoft 7950 enables:
- Easy configuration and set-up of your sampling and monitoring network,
- Alarm reporting for each gas and each channel
- Real time data access and data processing from any PC on the LAN connected to the SQL database server

Additional 1316-3 monitors can be used with the LumaSoft Gas Multipoint 7950 remote control software to increase the number of dedicated continuous monitoring in up to 24 locations. The software supports up to 24 monitors performing all three gas-monitoring tasks, all linked to a single computer via USB-hub(s).
