800 VDC — High Voltage DC Distribution for Data Centers

Have a question? Ask an Expert
As AI accelerates data center energy demands, higher distribution voltages are essential to maintain efficiency and support next-generation workloads. Advanced Energy empowers the shift from low-voltage 50 V distribution to ±400 VDC/800 VDC architectures with a comprehensive portfolio of rack-mounted and board-mounted HVDC power conversion solutions.
Scaling AI Infrastructure with 800 VDC

The Challenges of Traditional Low-Voltage Power Distribution

Scaling data center power with legacy three-phase AC input and 50 V output increases complexity, reliability risk, cost, and weight:

  • Massive busbars are required to avoid large-scale resistive losses.
  • Losses generate heat that must be removed and cooled.
  • High current demands can push standard connectors to their thermal limits, necessitating larger connectors.

800 VDC: Higher Voltage, Lower Current

The industry is rapidly moving to 800 VDC, also referred to as ±400 VDC or HVDC (high voltage DC). Higher voltage and far less current flowing:
  • Minimizes electrical losses
  • Increases power path efficiency
  • Reduces busbar size and weight requirements
  • Eliminates connector overheating
  • Eliminates the need for bulky high-current connectors

Enabling the Shift to 800 VDC

The 800 VDC model brings substantial benefits along with new engineering requirements. Several key protections and design measures are required to ensure compliance with applicable standards for personnel and equipment safety, including:

  • Reinforced insulation
  • Expanded creepage and clearance
  • Pollution degree ratings
  • High voltage spacing

Two approaches are emerging for 800 VDC distribution:

  • Board-mounted conversion (direct-to-server): 800 VDC delivered directly to server boards
  • Rack-mounted conversion: 800 VDC to 50 VDC at the rack with centralized power shelves. This
Rack-mounted conversion is often the preferred path below ~100 kW or when existing 50 VDC equipment must be retained.

Purpose-Built Rack Power Solutions

Hyperscale Infrastructure

The rapid growth of Al, cloud computing, and high-density data center deployments is driving unprecedented power demands. Traditional AC power distribution architectures introduce multiple conversion stages, resulting in increased energy losses, higher operating costs, larger infrastructure footprints, and greater system complexity.

Our Solution: High-Efficiency 800 VDC/HVDC Power Shelves

Advanced Energy’s high voltage DC (HVDC) power shelves enable efficient and scalable power distribution for modern Al, cloud, telecom, and hyperscale environments. By distributing power at higher DC voltages (e.g. 800 VDC architectures), our solutions reduce conversion losses, simplify power architectures, and enable higher-density deployments while maintaining industry-leading reliability.

Why HVDC?

HVDC distribution helps eliminate unnecessary conversion stages, improve efficiency, support higher rack power densities, simplify renewable energy integration, reduce infrastructure footprint, and enable more sustainable operations.
